Bolivia - Finca Mathias

Prijsklasse: € 10,95 tot € 42,50 incl. VAT

The first time we tasted coffees from Bolivia this coffee stood out. This had to be something special. We looked for this mainly in the variety. What turned out to be, an "ordinary" Catuai Rojo. Expect a complex coffee with flavors of Nougat, honey and raspberry.

Description

Raymundo Ayla is the owner of Finca Mathias, located at 1,900 - 2,000 metres above sea level. He is 38 years old and runs the farm together with his wife, whom he married 16 years ago. Raymundo started the farm six years ago, after working in Argentina for a few years making clothes. With the money he earned in Buenos Aires, he bought a piece of land and planted mainly catuai rojo (80%) and some vegetables (20%). Raymundo learned to grow coffee from his father, who is also a coffee farmer.

His wife said the following about the farm: "We are blessed with high altitude and moderate rainfall, which is ideal for growing coffee. We always check the quality of the processed coffee and make small improvements every year. Unlike other crops, coffee can only be harvested three years after planting the seedlings. Those three years are a big investment for us. Even if we cannot yet harvest, we still have to take care of the coffee plants. That is why the joy of the first harvest was so great.

The Catuai rojo, contrary to what its taste suggests, is a variety bred for its high production. It is a cross between the Mundo Novo (from the coffee of Pedra Preta, for example) and the compact growing Caturra.
