Congo - Kivu Sopacdi - washed
We found this coffee during a blind tasting and it immediately stood out. What a sweetness and fruitiness. It turned out to be a coffee from D.R. Congo. Grown on the edges of Lake Kivu in the province of North Kivu. Besides the fact that this is a new origin for Roasting Company Luijendijk, there is also a special story behind this coffee. Read more below! Expect a coffee with a delicious balance with notes of dulce de leche caramel and hints of deep red fruit.
Description
Sopacdi is a cooperative founded with the aim of restoring the Democratic Republic of Congo's reputation as a coffee-producing region. As a result of the country's long history of civil wars, many farming families have had a difficult time. Farmers often had no other option than to bring their goods to Rwanda via smuggling routes. There they had to sell them for dump prices in order to make a living.
The cooperative was founded 16 years ago and since 2008 they have been successfully exporting high quality coffee. Currently the cooperative has 5800 members and is growing. The average farm of the members is 0 - 2 hectare and participating in the cooperative gives them many advantages. For example, members can sell coffee at high prices (at least fair trade) and they can jointly purchase new coffee plants.
Many of the Sopacdi farmers are widows, often they lost their husbands during the crossing of Lake Kivu. Sopacdi pays the widows a premium so they can support their families. Other pillars for Sopacdi are that they educate their members in organic farming and nature conservation.
