Ethiopia - Yirgachefe - Washed

The birthplace of the first coffee: Yirgachefe is the region in Ethiopia where, according to legend, coffee comes from. This coffee is recognizable by its special flavor, different from what we are used to and known for many aromas clearly recognizable for its origin. Taste caramel, citrus fruits and the delicious floral scent. We prefer to roast this coffee just a little sweeter so it is wonderfully balanced as a filter and an espresso.

Description

Sopacdi is a cooperative founded with the aim of restoring the Democratic Republic of Congo's reputation as a coffee-producing region. As a result of the country's long history of civil wars, many farming families have had a difficult time. Farmers often had no other option than to bring their goods to Rwanda via smuggling routes. There they had to sell them for dump prices in order to make a living.

The cooperative was founded 16 years ago and since 2008 they have been successfully exporting high quality coffee. Currently the cooperative has 5800 members and is growing. The average farm of the members is 0 - 2 hectare and participating in the cooperative gives them many advantages. For example, members can sell coffee at high prices (at least fair trade) and they can jointly purchase new coffee plants.

Many of the Sopacdi farmers are widows, often they lost their husbands during the crossing of Lake Kivu. Sopacdi pays the widows a premium so they can support their families. Other pillars for Sopacdi are that they educate their members in organic farming and nature conservation.
