Description
Myanmar has only recently started producing specialty coffee and developments are happening with impressive speed and results. Our partner This Side Up got in touch with the Hopong cooperative, who was able to organize coffee farmers from two villages in just one year to jointly produce their very first batch of sun-dried natural coffee. In the same season, This Side Up was even able to organize exports.
Besides opium and other crops, coffee has been grown in myanmar for a long time. Because of the low prices, it was never interesting to enter the coffee business. This because the poppy offered a much better price. But the Hopong farmers were tired of secretly producing opium for drug lords.
They decided to jump in the deep end and embraced Specialty coffee to become truly independent. Incredibly, through social media, they found out that in a neighboring village, sun-dried natural coffees were being produced with the help of Winrock, an NGO. The leaders decided to contact the Ngo and managed to set up a training in a short time and without any investments.
With dedication and curiosity, she learned from these other communities, how they could increase quality, secure better incomes and gain visibility on the international specialty coffee market. This promises a lot of good things in the years to come!
